Seven Designer Mahjong Lines, Explained: What Each Brand Actually Does Well
Share
Most mahjong retailers sell one brand and ask you to pick a color. We went the other way: we stock seven different tile houses, which means about 112 designs sitting on the same shelf, and the honest answer to “which set should I buy” is usually “which one of these seven are you?”
Because they are genuinely different. They use different materials, different printing methods, different artists and different price points, and they are aimed at different players. Here is the tour.
| Line | Designs | Price | What it is known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oh My Mahjong | 22 | $169 | Preppy Americana, family-surname tiles |
| The Mahjong Line | 20 | $199 | Released drops, resort collaborations |
| Bespoke Mahjong | 22 | $199 | Artist and music collaborations |
| USA Mahjong | 28 | $169–$229 | Widest range, own designs |
| Miss Mahjong | 11 | $199 | Character sets, travel bundles |
| Mahj Tile Haus | 7 | $229 | Top-tier finishes, small runs |
| Southern Sparrow | 5 | $169–$199 | Hand-painted chinoiserie |
A note on price before we start: designer mahjong has become a category where the same object sells for $350 or $545 depending on whose name is on the box. We have written about why a premium set does not have to cost $400; the short version is that the $169–$229 range above reflects materials and print method, not a discount on quality.
Oh My Mahjong — the American preppy original
Oh My Mahjong is the line that made mahjong look like a country club accessory. Its tiles are named after people — Smith, Osler, Pippa, Talulah, Willow — and it was among the first to swap the traditional red and green dragons for motifs an American audience reads instantly, and to pair sets with leather cases and gold-toned racks.
Pick it if you want the classic American look: coastal, monogram-adjacent, unembarrassed about being pretty. Nantucket and Seabreeze are the two that best show what the line does. At $169 it is also our most accessible entry point into a designer name.
The Mahjong Line — drops, and now resorts
The Mahjong Line organizes everything into named sub-lines — Minimal, Botanical, Classic, Cheeky, Foodie, Lucky, Ocean, Ranch — and releases them in drops rather than keeping a permanent catalogue. That is why their product names carry release numbers like “2.0” and “v2”.
The more interesting thing is where the tiles have ended up. Esperanza, an Auberge resort in Los Cabos, commissioned custom Baja-inspired sets from The Mahjong Line and runs a weekly Mahjong & Margaritas night with certified instructors. Bowie House in Fort Worth uses their tiles for a weekly beginner-and-open-play evening in the hotel's Billet Room. If you have played mahjong at a luxury resort in the last year, there is a real chance you were holding this brand.
Pick it if you like the drop culture — you see a release, you buy it, it is not there forever. Neon Purple and the Ocean Line in Barely Blue are good starting points, both $199.
Bespoke Mahjong — where the artists are
Bespoke is the collaboration line. The photographer Gray Malin has a Beach Club set and a Getaway Dogs set with them; the illustrator Corey Paige has a Color Crush set. There is a licensed Grateful Dead collection in three tie-dye colorways, a Year of the Horse pair, and seasonal sets like Springtime Safari and Lucky Charms.
Pick it if the set is a gift and you know what the recipient already loves. Nobody accidentally owns a Grateful Dead mahjong set — it is either perfect or wrong, and that makes it a very good present. Mostly $199.
Mahj Tile Haus — the top of the shelf
Seven designs, all at $229, and the finishes show it. Imperial Lotus, White Lotus, Palm Royale, Couture Confection — these are sets bought partly to be looked at, and they hold up as objects on a shelf in a way the cheaper lines do not.
Pick it if the set is a milestone gift or you actually display it between games. It is the line people buy for an anniversary, a retirement, or a big birthday.
Southern Sparrow — hand-painted chinoiserie
Southern Sparrow is the most traditional line we carry, and the only one built around hand-painted artwork. The pink chinoiserie set with its koi motif is the clearest example; there is also a Breezy Blue version with koi and bamboo, a Riviera Jet Set set, and a country club golf design. $169 to $199.
Pick it if you want the game to look like it has a history, or if the recipient collects blue-and-white. This is the line that reads as heirloom rather than trend.
Miss Mahjong — characters, and the travel sets
Miss Mahjong gives every set a personality. Miss Cowgirl, Miss Catrina, Miss Darling, Miss Out Of Office, and the jade-and-malachite Miss Classic pairs. There is a Hallmark collaboration bundle as well.
Miss Mahjong is also the only line here that makes a genuinely portable set: three Mini Miss travel bundles — Darling, Out Of Office and Cowgirl — all at $199. If you take mahjong on trips, start here; we wrote a whole guide to playing mahjong on vacation.
USA Mahjong — our own line, widest range
The house line runs from $169 to $229 and covers more ground than any single partner: coastal and tropical designs, pastoral florals, and the blue-and-white porcelain set at $229, which is the one people mistake for a much more expensive import.
Pick it if you want the best value per dollar and do not care whose name is on the box. It is also the line to browse if you are buying several sets at once for a club or a group.

Quick Answers
Which mahjong brand is best?
There is no single best — the seven lines are aimed at different buyers. Oh My Mahjong is the classic American preppy look at $169, The Mahjong Line is the one luxury resorts are commissioning, Bespoke does artist and music collaborations, and Mahj Tile Haus at $229 has the highest finishes.
Are all of these official 160-tile American sets?
Yes. Every set we carry is a full American mahjong configuration including jokers and flowers, compliant with National Mah Jongg League play.
Why do the prices range from $169 to $229?
Material, printing method and run size. Tiles at $229 use higher-grade finishes and smaller production runs; the $169 sets are excellent tiles in larger, more standardized production.
Is there a set I can travel with?
Yes — the three Mini Miss travel bundles by Miss Mahjong are built for it, at $199 each.
Do you sell wholesale across these brands?
Yes. Our wholesale program covers the full catalogue with a five-set minimum; you can apply on our wholesale page.
